Hot news off the Press !

Landmark Tree surgery has launched its monthly Newsletter !

Having been working on it for some months now, the new professional newsletter from Landmark is out.  Log onto our web-site to subscribe to it and read about all sorts of useful items for your diary, tree information and special offers from Landmark.  This has taken a considerable amount of time to set up and its seems as if the tree works and alternative tree products have run themselves.

The tree teams have been hard at it battling the downpours to try to stay on target for our weekly client lists and the logging and woodchip production has been loading and producing in all weathers.  Whilst we all know we need the rain it seems mother nature has decided to give us back the deficit in one or two weeks !

Our new logging tractor has been hard at it processing logs and kindling.

Welcoming a new team member to Landmark

Lotti is a rescue jack russell x terrier who has come to us by default. Having been destined for a new home with a family member of mine (who has been ill recently) she has fallen into the landmark routine and now seems destined to stick with us.  If you see her on site please dont throw a ball ! you will be there forever !!! Here she is with Zak one of our two border collies.

All the best for now !

Recycling and Product Use !

Image

Well the big chipper arrived and recycling on a grand scale begins !

Processing up to 15 tons an hour the Heizohack chipper continues to feed cord wood from the log yard and feed out endless tons of Biomass quality and Landscape quality woodchip.   Having worked for 8 hours in our yard we processed up to 80 tons of woodchip and this cleared a large hole in our logging area and produced another quality product for recycling. Some went to Slough Heat and Power that day and the following days and some went to Legoland’s new hotel site at Windsor.

Some is dropped direct onto the borders and some onto the landscaped borders for later spreading.

Works for tree surgery continue with the teams kept busy with all manner of tree management issues and we have undertaken planting over 3000 trees in the last three weeks on various pathways, woodlands and domestic gardens alike.

We are currently experimenting in the alternative use of some of our woodstock in supplying raw materials to the woodcarving market and even producing some interesting pieces of sculpture and objets d’art ourselves.More on that next time

Is Spring Upon Us ?

Image

Well the snows came and went ! and the ice came and went ! (we hope). We kept going through all of it and even the usual crop of snowy Cedar limbs on the ground and hung up in the trees didn’t halt work.  With temperatures reaching -15 in the bottom barns of the yard and the usual heat torch opening the locks every morning we managed to keep pace with the work. As the mornings got colder, the hats and gloves seemed to get bigger and thicker ! as it got really cold the opening comments of each day from the guys moved from “blimey thats cold” to more serious remarks which could not be published here

The somewhat “balmy” conditions of +10c are a joy to work in. Log sales took a sharp increase for a few weeks and this was most welcome as a particularly mild winter had placed the log production this year in jeopardy of not being very economic at all.  We are busy drawing together our 2010 wood and placing some of our 2011 wood into a pile for chipping !  Such is the glut of wood we have we have had to resort to chipping it all for biomass as we cannot move for it in the log yard.  We expect a contract chipping unit into us for the end of the month and I shall be taking photos of that for the blog as a mighty chipper breaks down 30 inch wide chunks of timber to woodchip !

Tree works are busy and we have a few good size planting projects to tackle in the next few weeks and we have been busy preparing Legoland Windsor for its opening season with health and safety works being high priority. We have the new hotel site to help manage with its tree population and some new planting of trees in there too.

A new Tractor is set to grace us for our log yard operations and I shall include this on the next blog.

Next week sees our biggest ever training week as 4 different members of staff complete management training, first aid training and Chainsaw training.

New Year New Storm !

Written by Mr.L.Ivil (Landmark Assistant Manager)

New Year and new challenges for the team at Landmark!

Only one week into the New Year and we have already faced many exciting and demanding situations… let the year begin!

On the first day back after the Christmas break we were greeted by the new pride of our fleet… the Unimog! Although tackling the left-hand drive has given us some ‘interesting’ moments, this vehicle will be a huge benefit to us for the busy year ahead.  This has already been evident with some high winds and storms, unexpected at this time of year.  We have tackled these with ease with the Unimog and its larger load capacity.

More power to our arm !

Winter is always a difficult time but our skill and dedication has already been tested with the large influx of call-outs towards the end of the week to wind-blown trees.  Our upbeat, dedicated teams have stepped up to the challenge with call-outs during the working day and out-of-hour emergencies for both private clients and council trees.  This really is a testament to our skills as tree surgeons – the ability to tackle all jobs, big or small, in a safe and professional manner.

Touch wood (no pun intended!) the worst of the weather has passed and we can return to normal and further the progression and development of the future stars of Landmark.

Bring on 2012….. (L.Ivil)

Some of the recent winds caused much damage with Landmark being called on by many councils and highway authorities. We cleared 22 roads and pathways in 48 hours and some of the damage is noted below.  Some might think this is a good time for tree surgeons and we all rub our hands together but the truth is most of us mourn the loss of trees in this manner and our work diaries take on a life of their own giving all of us little sleep.

Untimley Loss

We work on and try to look forward to more steady and less risky work loads.

Mark.

All Set for 2012

Image

Happy New Year to All !  As we ready ourselves for 2012 we take rime to reflect on the previous years efforts and the problems we may face in the coming months.  Its no lie we were treated quite well with the weather.  Few operations were affected by weather and whilst the rain was difficult at times it was a far easier winter period for us than the last few years.  I dont want to tempt fate but thinking back to the snow is chilling in more ways than the obvious !

We start this year a new foreman in the presence of Mr.Ben Rockell who I hope will bring lots of new motivation and skill to the teams.  Ben started in mid december and certainly offered his skill for the few weeks before we stopped for christmas.  His partner had a baby boy on christmas day so whilst he will not be back to work today as we re-start he will be in a few days. All the best to him and his new family.

The new Unimog arrived a week before christmas and we hope to implement this in the next few days to good effect. Here are some photos of its arrival and whilst not sign written yet it looks very smart and clean ! for now……  It is a rarity in the unimog world and in the uk in that it is a U1300L which has been converted to a tipper !  With a full length tipping back on it and tow hitch it is very much a custom build. Thanks to Frank Atkinson for his hard work with this vehicle.  The beech team have the pleasure of its use at Landmark and i know this is with some glee and apprehension.

Unimog Delivery

And the finished article ready for work in the yard

Clean for now !

Logging will for a very big part of our works for the first week as we sold 70 cubic bags of logs in the last four days before christmas !  we have plenty of stock but splitting for delivery will be priority.

We enter 2012 with much tree works to do including a large amount of works at Legoland Windsor and I feel quite proud of our achievements in sourcing work at this difficult time of year. I know one would like to say its because we have been in existence for 25 years and we ought to have plenty of work but after the last few more difficult years i take nothign for granted now.  With a team of 11 working surgeons we are a large company with many mouths to feed and much to maintain.

All the best for 2012 and here is looking for our economy to fully come out of its dark times and return to somewhat easier and more stabilised times.

Best regards,

Mark Knight

All Things Bright and Beautiful!

Well Christmas is really upon us as we offer further Tree Services to our Clients.  Here we have Landmark erecting the Queens “gifted” tree to Windsor town centre outside Windsor Castle.  We have undertaken this for the last 6 years now and it provides us with a range of challenging problems which we have learnt to overcome and adapt to.

We erect and take down many christmas tree for large organisations such other borough councils and estates and indeed we have been erecting and removing the larger christmas trees for the Houses of Parliament and Trafalgar Square for many years.

Crane Lift

We turn our eye towards planting now as the first few frosts hit the ground and lifting of bare rooted trees and plants gets under way. We have started planting car parks, woodlands, parks and various hedges across the thames valley.

Tree works still form a large part of our works as we have expanded both the tree teams and log yard staff.  We now run four team ! a day for the at least half of the week and most weekends are being worked to meet demand.

Thinking back to this time last year we were about to be engulfed by snow and this brought operations to a slower pace.  Whilst we work in almost balmy conditions some days, the snow seems so very far away.
